Friendship and Support

Welcome to the Parent Center!

Our play groups for toddlers provide a chance for children to bond with one another, and with adults whom they grow to love and trust. We feel that children forming close ties at a young age may develop a strong, enduring bond of friendship- the kind that provides a source of support for the ups and downs that follow all the way through adolescence. Parent-child activities and field trips allow for special quality time in a situation that permits a child to develop socially, by learning to behave appropriately in a public setting.

The Parent Center also offers a source of information on parenting and family issues, allowing parents to share feelings of frustration, resources, ideas, and solutions. Just as children cannot be expected to know about things they have yet to experience, parents need to be able to learn from other parents and professionals in a supportive environment.

The Parent Center is run by parent volunteers, and will enlist Community Resource People (teachers, pediatrician and family doctors, school social workers, librarian, counselors, Red Cross volunteers, etc.) to conduct parent education classes and discussion groups as desired by individual groups. Parent resources including books, videos, and monthly newsletter are available to those wishing to borrow from our family life library.

It is so easy to feel powerless in being able to provide the kind of experience one wishes for their children, and The Parent Center provides an opportunity to share talent, expertise and ideas in helping to make Growing Places a quality resource for our children. -RDW
